An Big Event in Entertainment
09/24 09:07IN RETROSPECT, Roxborough native Kim Delaney probably wishes her shaky Thursday night appearance at the nationwide Constitution Center was, as she'd like to say, "All make-believe."
It was as real as the series finale to the ABC soap opera "All My Children," the show that gave the 49-year-old actress her big break.
Delaney's short speech at the Liberty Medal Ceremony, which honored former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, grew to become a much-buzzed-about movie clip yesterday.
Confusion, long pauses and tight smiles dotted Delaney's speech as she spoke in front of Gates, Gov. Corbett and Lisa Nutter, the mayor's wife. The movie ends with a production worker escorting the actress off the stage.
The silent audience grew uncomfortable as Delaney spoke and many seemed to feel sorry for her.
The movie was linked on celebrity gossip blogs and news sites, prompting the bloggerati and business office workers alike to ponder "What's the deal with Kim Delaney?"
TMZ.com, PerezHilton.com, the Drudge Report and other people used the movie to revisit her 2002 DUI arrest in Malibu, as well as her subsequent rehab stints for substance abuse.
But on closer inspection, there came out to be more to Delaney's appearance. The nationwide advertising failed to highlight what came out to be some teleprompter and production issues that contributed to the confusion.
ABC newsman Bob Woodruff, who was doing the voice-over for the event, accidentally introduced someone else before properly stating Delaney's name. And her mike was muted for a few seconds after she came out onstage.
Still, she did not appear to be on her game when she hit the stage. She looked unfocused and disheveled once she was front and center.
Before she started to discuss what her character on "Army Wives" has gone via about the series, Delaney says to Gates – cryptically and away from the microphone – "this is my job."
Delaney speaks in the handle as although she is her character from the show and at 1 point, the key phrases coming out of her mouth make little sense.
"As I try to comfort wives, husbands, families, fathers, children [long pause] loved ones, made good, what I've learned may be the Constitution Center," said Delaney, wearing a sleeveless, gold, sequined dress.
"But for me, it's all make-believe. I do that as a job. It's make-believe," she said. "I have the luxury to do all with this on a television set show."
One thing's for sure. Anyone attached to Delaney and the Constitution Center was on connection lockdown yesterday. Her publicist, Robin Baum with Slate PR in Los Angeles, did not return an email seeking comment. A spokeswoman with Delaney's show "Army Wives" declined to comment. And representatives for the Constitution Center didn't return repeated phone calls over the Daily News from www.trendszone.info.
